Brian was ordained Deacon in 1957, and Priest in 1958, and served as curate at St Nicolas', Chiswick (where he married the vicar's daughter, Rosemary) and at Holy Trinity, Witney, Oxfordshire.
He was Vicar of St Gabriel's, North Acton from 1962 to 1968, and then began his ministry in our Diocese as Chaplain in Oslo, where he stayed until 1989.
The Queen awarded Brian the OBE in 1975 for his services to the Anglican Church in Norway: He expanded the ministry hugely, largely as a result of air travel being more accessible. He would often (twice a month?) take services in Oslo in the morning, then fly to one of the other major hubs to lead a service in the evening. The workload and spread of the ministry soon required help, so an assistant chaplain role was created in the late 1970s.
While Chaplain in Oslo, he was also Rural Dean for Scandinavia from 1975 to 1979 and then Archdeacon of Scandinavia, Northern Germany and all the Russias from 1980 to 1989.
He became Dean of Gibraltar in 1989, and soon won the hearts of his congregation by his humility and care. He came to love his Cathedral and Gibraltar. This love stayed with him for the rest of his life, a sentiment shared by his surviving wife, Rosemary. As leader of the Anglican Church in Gibraltar he integrated well with the local community and was very well regarded. He maintained a good rapport with the other religious communities in Gibraltar.
During his term of office he saw the complete refurbishment of the interior and exterior of the Cathedral following a successful appeal in 1995. The organ also underwent extensive re-building, including the installation of a chair organ.
As Dean of Gibraltar one of his highlights was undoubtedly the visit in November 1997 of Dr Carey to the City of Gibraltar and the Cathedral, this being the first ever visit by a reigning Archbishop of Canterbury. As the mother church of the Diocese of Gibraltar in Europe the Cathedral under his leadership played a major part in the celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the foundation of the Diocese, in 1992.
Brian retired to the UK in 1998 and lived in Royal Wootton Bassett. He filled in as priest at St Bartholomew's during a 9 month interregnum period in 2005, and then assisted at several village churches for many years.
Brian and Rosemary moved into a care home near Oxford in September 2021. Brian passed from this life to the next on 20th December 2022, and his funeral took place on 14th January 2023.
With thanks to Nick Horlock (Brian's eldest son) and Robert Goldwin (former Warden in Gibraltar) for their contributions.
